The Arrest

The Arrest

"Is Nathaniel Denning here?" rang a voice over the crowd.
"I'm Nathaniel Denning," came Buck's intrepid assertion.
"Buck..." began June, but he quailed her with the briefest of warning glances.
Jack Sutter sauntered over to Buck, pulling a pair of cuffs with confident gravitas, no less menacing for the slight flourish in the execution.
"Nathaniel Buckland Denning, you are under arrest for possession and trafficking of heroin." By this time, Jack had reached Buck, and his confidence wavered imperceptibly under the unshaken imperiousness of the offender. He stood with the handcuffs extended slightly, visibly less sure with each second that he should put them on. Buck luxuriated in the yawning moment, drawing power from the enforcer's discomfiture. Finally, with perfect composure, he cut the thread.
"Officer, may I ask what evidence you have for these charges?"
"We have photographs of you distributing your product to a number of notorious street vendors. A trip to your warehouse confirmed just what you were selling.". Although the solidity of his evidence had reinvigorated Jack, he was still no match for the unflappable Buck.
"I assume this evidence is stored in the locker at your precinct," purred the accused.
"Under lock and key, you may be sure," rejoined the officer knowingly.
"Where my wife clerks under the surname Cumberland...?"
Jack spared a light smirk for the still-diffident June, hovering three feet behind Buck.
